While they possess immense longevity compared to mortals, they are bound by rules regarding their notebooks. A shinigami cannot leave the realm without their Death Note, meaning the object is both their tool and their tether. If a note is lost or destroyed while in the Human World, the Shinigami becomes trapped on Earth; if lost while in the Realm, they cannot enter the human world. However, losing the notebook does not sever their connection to existence or cause death.
